Derry Arge

Derry with a newly taken up home bred tiercel Goshawk.

Finding a hood that actually fits a hawk has been a lifelong obsession with me. I corresponded and swapped hoods with Ronald Stevens, then became friends and stayed at his home, Fermoyle Lodge, in Ireland. Ronald was passionate in his search for a hood that actually fits! I have some braceless Pakistani hoods here that he gifted me, along with a rare lizard skin anglo-indian hood made by Jack Mavrogordato which, in spite of its looks, is actually quite a good fit on a peregrine falcon. I discussed the merits of various hoods with Geoffrey Pollard who was my guru for many years. I've tried hoods made by most of  top makers, but the only ones which have consistently fitted have been those I got from Jeremy Roselle. These days, a lot of hoods seem to be purchased on looks alone, but if they don't fit they are worse than useless. I mostly fly shortwings and the hood is, in my opinion, a vital tool. It is difficult enough to hood a goshawk which doesn't want to be hooded, but to do so with a hood that doesn't slide on easily has me wanting to learn a second language to provide a sufficient range of swear words to fit the occasion! I am very pleased to hear that Jeremy has finally taken the plunge and decided to make hoods commercially. I am sure he will do well.

Roselle hoods are simply some of the best fitting and finely crafted hoods available to falconers today. I'm not one for protracted hooding drills with candlelight and dimmers. I need a hood that falls on easily, is snug, and has the comfort a new bird requires. A perfect fit is critical in keeping a bird from becoming hood shy and resentful towards the falconer. Right out of the box the beak openings are excact and flared to prescision. Finally a hood that does the hood training for you. Thanks Jeremy.

I have been hunting with raptors since the late 60s and the last 6 years or so have been using Jeremy Roselle’s fine hand crafted hoods.  The X stitching is so perfect it looks like it was done by a machine instead of Jeremy’s hand.  It takes a steady hand and expert precision to stay on the inside of the leather like he does.

If you give him the type of bird, sex, and its weight, he has an uncanny way of getting a perfect fit.  If the hood does not fit he will, of course, adjust the size with a new hood and exchange it for you in short order.  He will get you the hood you want and it is usually on the first try!

His pride in workmanship is apparent in all of his hoods that I have seen, which is quit a few.  Many of my friends use his hoods and have the same satisfaction with there fit and construction as I do.  I highly recommend Jeremy’s hoods.  You will not be disappointed.

During the last 20 years, I have amassed a sizeable collection of hoods from all over the globe.  Recently, a peculiar truth occurred to me; my hood collection is virtually worthless.  They’re interesting pieces of art, for certain, but the majority of them belong on a shelf, not on a raptor’s head.  In contrast to those are the hoods that I have purchased from Jeremy Roselle.  Every single one of them has been well-used and well-loved.

I have a passion for Merlins, and before Roselle, I was never able to find a hood that fits these small falcons the way it should.  Jeremy’s hoods are perfect!  The beak opening is absolutely spot on!  I can’t imagine hood-training a passage merlin without one of Jeremy’s hoods.  I’m absolutely convinced that when it comes to small hoods, Jeremy is (as they say) “The Man!”

Furthermore, I've seen his hoods on shortwings and hybrid longwings that belong to some of my friends, and it appears that his precise handiwork translates nicely in larger sizes.  He’s truly a virtuoso when it comes to creating a beautiful hood with the perfect fit for your bird.
